Club History

The Johnson County Bicycle Club began as an offshoot of the Johnson County Outdoor Society in the late 1960s to promote safe recreational and social cycling. The club originally was a part of the Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department. Seeking independence, the club became a separate entity in 1973.

Early club members numbered about 30. The popularity of the annual "Cider Mill Century" increased membership, which now totals nearly 350 riders.

JCBC Today

JCBC is strictly a recreational cycling club, and is not involved in racing events. The club sponsors three annual pay rides of up to 100 miles. In addition, quarterly club socials feature speakers and topics ranging from slide shows of members' vacation tours to demonstrations of new cycling equipment to talks on nutrition, safety and advocacy.

During the winter "off season," an annual banquet keeps members in touch.

In addition, JCBC's board acts as an advisory board to the City of Overland Park in helping fulfill its "Bicycle Friendly Community" status with the League of American Bicyclists.

Weekly Rides

Throughout the year, volunteer ride leaders host free rides open to both members and non-members. The rides and ride leaders' phone numbers are listed in the Ride Schedule. These rides:

  • are scheduled throughout the week at various times during warm-weather months.
  • are scheduled a few days a week during winter months.
  • vary in speed, distance and starting location at the discretion of the ride leader.
  • almost always include maps and "regrouping" points along the route to let slower riders catch up.
  • frequently begin or conclude with restaurant stops, in keeping with the club's unofficial motto: "Ride to eat; eat to ride!"

Because many routes go into rural areas, riders should carry an extra tire tube, patch kit and pump on their bicycle and know how to fix a flat. Ride leaders welcome your questions.

2006 "Pay" Rides

JCBC sponsors three annual organized rides:

Ride fees vary. Members and non-members alike are welcome to ride, but members receive a discount. Riders must sign a release and are encouraged to wear approved bicycle helmets and adhere to rules of the road. The rides include:

  • SAG (Support And Gear) stops at 15 to 20-mile intervals along the route to rest, refill water bottles and enjoy JCBC's legendary SAG goodies.
  • distance options, some rides include 100-mile "century" challenges.
  • roving SAG vehicles that sweep the route to assist riders in need.
  • opportunities to meet new cycling friends.
